SPARTANBURG — Downtown Spartanburg has a new place to take care of their dogs and cats, and it’s the culmination of one owner’s lifelong commitment.
Pet’s Favorite Play Place opened along the downtown Rail Trail at the end of 2023 and represents the next logical step for owner Caroline Cofer.
“I am a veterinarian,” Cofer said. “I’ve always wanted to be one since I knew that that was something people did for a living. It was always my plan to own my own pet-related business.”
Cofer grew up in Tennessee and worked as a veterinarian in the state, treating cats and dogs until she moved to Spartanburg County in 2017 and founded her veterinary hospital Pet’s Favorite Vet, which she still operates today.
Although it has not been easy, opening her own daycare facility just seemed right.
“The idea of working for somebody else my entire life was never something I even honestly considered,” Cofer said.
The facility offers daycare as well as overnight boarding, a dog wash and a dog park. But Cofer said it is her and her staff’s commitment to the pets that sets them apart.

The staff are specially trained to tend to the pets’ needs and, because of Cofer’s veterinary background, there is particular importance placed on hygiene and preventing the outbreak of disease.
Enriching the pets with puzzles and games is also a top priority so the pets are not just lying around doing nothing.
“For some of the older dogs, the ladies will sit and just read the dog books,” Cofer said. “Making sure they get that mental stimulation, too, can be really important for a happy, healthy dog.”
There is not just fun for the dogs and cats. Hopefully by April, the daycare’s dog park will have sports televisions and a bar where dog owners can relax and watch football with a beverage while their canines play.
Cofer said it was hectic buying the land for the daycare and setting up the business in addition to running her veterinary clinic in Boiling Springs but that business has been good and she is happy with the team she has assembled.
“Nobody can do everything on their own,” she said. “Anybody who tells you they did it all on their own is full of it.”
Now that the business is up and running, Cofer said she is just happy to be able to help out Spartanburg’s pets. The county has sometimes struggled to accommodate its animals.
“I just want to be another piece of helping give dogs and cats and their people a great life,” she said. “I want to help people with everything that they need to take the best possible care of their pet.”
