Kelly Ripa Is Concerned About Her Senior Dog’s Health: ‘She Stopped Doing Almost Everything’ – DogTime

By Zahrah Patel
Television show host Kelly Ripa recently opened up about a personal struggle that many pet parents face as their furry companions grow older. During the recent episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark,” Ripa and her co-host, Mark Consuelos, expressed concerns about the health of their senior dog, Chewie. At 17 years old, Chewie’s declining health has prompted the couple to consider when it might be time to say goodbye.
On National Dress Up Your Pet Day, the conversation on “Live with Kelly and Mark” took an emotional turn as the hosts reflected on their two dogs. After a lighthearted mention of their 4-year-old dog Lena, who apparently finds wearing clothes “humiliating,” the discussion shifted to Chewie. Ripa described the significant changes in their senior dog’s behavior, noting that their beloved pet has “stopped doing almost everything.”

Ripa shared a heartbreaking incident from the previous night, revealing that Chewie had an accident. For Ripa, it was a troubling sign of her dog’s worsening condition. She described the tender moments that followed as she bathed Chewie. At that point, she noted how starkly different her once energetic companion had become. Instead of her usual spirited demeanor, Chewie now lay quietly with her head down, appearing weary and resigned.
The couple reflected on Chewie’s long life, recognizing her old age as a factor in her recent behavior. Consuelos stated that Chewie is nearing 18 years old, an impressive age for a dog. Yet, Ripa expressed her uncertainty about the best course of action. Despite the common saying that “you’ll know when it’s time,” Ripa voiced her doubts. She explained that it is not as straightforward as people might suggest.
As they consider humane euthanasia, the hosts look for advice from veterinarians or others who have faced similar situations. The couple’s love for their dog was evident as they spoke, with Consuelos affirming, “She’s a great dog,” and Ripa agreeing wholeheartedly, calling Chewie “the best.”
