For a third year in a row, the French Bulldog has been named as America’s most popular dog breed according to the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) 2024 registration statistics.
“The Frenchie has solidified itself as America’s sweetheart, and it’s no surprise why,” said Gina DiNardo, AKC’s executive secretary. “They are fabulous companions for a variety of people.”
The 10 most popular dog breeds in the U.S. for the 2024 include the following breeds:
The AKC, a not-for-profit purebred dog registry organization, also named a number of dog breeds to what it calls its “movers and shakers” list, highlighting breeds that have made major moves in popularity over the year.
Notably, the AKC said in its release, the Cane Corso has been quietly climbing the charts since becoming recognized by the AKC in 2010. Over the past decade, registrations for this breed have increased 414 percent and it has risen from 47th most popular in 2014 to 14th in 2024.
“The Cane Corso is one to watch, as it has consistently increased in popularity since becoming recognized,” added DiNardo. “Corsi are majestic and intensely loyal, but not for everyone. As with any breed, we can’t stress enough the importance of doing your research to find the right breed for your lifestyle and to ensure that you’re getting a well-bred dog from a responsible breeder.”
Other movers and shakers in 2024 include the following breeds:
Making strides over the past decade are the Boykin Spaniel, moving from the 108th spot in 2014 to the 65th spot in 2024; the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, ranked 99th in 2014 and 69th in 2024; and Beauceron, placed in the 145th spot in 2014 and in the 100th spot in 2024.
Before you purchase any dog breed name drop gifts, or pet gifts in general, be sure to consider the kinds of dogs your customers might be buying for. For a complete listing of top dog breeds from 2013-2024, visit the AKC’s website.
