A dog shot and killed by officers last week had reportedly been seen attacking people and another dog, Weatherford police say.
WPD issued a press release Friday in regard to the incident that occurred the night of Dec. 17, after callers reported the pit bull was attacking people, including the mother of one of the callers.
Officers arrived on scene around 11 p.m. and observed the dog attacking another dog, according to the release. An officer deployed a TASER to incapacitate the animal, but the dog resumed its attack once the TASER cycle injured.
The other dog’s owner was able to successfully retrieve their pet, but police say the put bull again became aggressive and advanced toward the owner and their dog. In response, the officer continued to deploy a TASER as additional officers arrived on scene. The dog managed to dislodge the TASER probes and fled down the street, with officers pursuing and believing the dog to pose an imminent threat to public safety, according to the release.
Officers contained the dog behind a building on an adjoining property, and, after an initial attempt to neutralize the animal was unsuccessful, the dog ran toward officers stationed at the other side of the building, where the animal was fatally shot.
The department said it is conducting a thorough criminal investigation into the incident, along with an internal review of the use of force.
“We are committed to maintaining transparency and accountability as we review this matter and ensure that all actions taken align with departmental policies and public safety standards,” according to the WPD statement. “Further updates will be provided as they become available.”
The Weatherford Democrat submitted an open records request to obtain boy cam footage.
