Carthage born and raised, I have always lived in Panola County. Being able to serve the people of this county has been a dream.

In the face of overcrowded shelters and countless dogs without a home, the Panola County Dog Rescue is nearly constructed. Looking to the community for support, this new rescue is seeking donations to finish off their location in DeBerry.
The rescue facility is nearly completed. Set to house up to 10 dogs at a time, the mission is to save lives. With overcrowding in shelters state and nationwide, no-kill shelters or rescues like this have stepped in to curb the increase in euthanasia. Jorea McNamee, founder and director of operations of the rescue, says the issue hits close to home and invested in the future of Panola County dogs.
McNamee, a forever dog lover, says that she has always been a rescuer, taking in stays for years now.
“I’ve always been the dog lady. I love them and whenever someone would have one that they didn’t want or that was just a sweet stray, I would go get them. At one point I was caring for thirteen at a time!”
While the outside structure has mostly been completed, additional funds are needed to complete the facility’s interior with insulation and a secure, barn-style door as well as a fenced-in yard.
Founded in conjunction with the nationwide 501©(3) fiscal sponsor for animal welfare projects Chappy and Friends, the rescue is able to apply for grants and offer tax benefits to donors. As a rescue under this organization, fundraising and even non-cash donations such as food are made easier and more transparent.
The trend of overcrowding leading to euthanasia in animal shelters is statewide. According to the Best Friends Animal Society, an estimated 82,681 cats and dogs were euthanized in Texas shelters, higher than any other state that year.
Suffering the loss of her father in September, McNamee put her inheritance toward her goal of saving lives. Starting up the rescue with those funds, she turned pain into an opportunity for local dogs at risk.
“I’m very used to caring for dogs. But having this rescue is completely new to me,” says McNamee, “That’s why we are so interested in community investment; not just financially but also their opinions and ideas.”
