HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – The City of Harrisonburg is reminding residents to purchase dog licenses by January 31. All dog owners within the city are required to obtain a license for each dog they own.
With some residents unaware of the process, there are two main ways to get your dog licensed: you can visit the treasurer’s office on the first floor of city hall–or head to the local SPCA. Officials say it’s a way to encourage pet owners to vaccinate their dogs against rabies.
“So when you come to get your dog license, one of the things you have to do is prove that your pet has been vaccinated, and anything we can do to reduce the chance of rabies in our community is something that we’re always going to encourage,” said Director of Communications and Public Engagement for the City of Harrisonburg, Micahel Parks.
To secure a dog license, pet owners must present a valid rabies certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian. This requirement applies to all dogs aged 16 weeks or older, regardless of whether they are kept indoors or outdoors.
Licenses can be obtained at the following locations:
• Harrisonburg Treasurer’s Office: 409 South Main Street
• Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA: 2170 Old Furnace Road
Once issued, the dog license tag must be attached to the dog’s collar, especially if the dog is off the owner’s property. This helps animal control officers reunite lost pets with their families quickly.
For additional details on pricing, forms, and the licensing process, residents can visit the city’s website at www.HarrisonburgVA.gov/dog-license.
