A family is looking to hold the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office responsible for a shooting incident that nearly killed their dog. The family says the deputies did a welfare check at the wrong home and opened fire on their dog.
A family member who did not want to be identified said her nephew was sleeping on a couch with the window open when a deputy opened their gate and fired three gunshots because she was scared. The family member says their dog named Coco growled at the deputy when she entered the yard.
“Yesterday was scary. The officers were here. My nephew was scared.”
The family member says the deputy came into her yard with their gun drawn, attempting to do a welfare check, but at the wrong unit.
“She proceeds to stand in the gate. Our dog Coco just had a couple of pups. She’s very calm, but she doesn’t know this person. She’s in mother mode. The officer yelled to my nephew get your dog. Before he had a chance to compose and understand what was going on, she proceeds to open the gate with the gun, and Coco automatically growls. She didn’t go towards her, just growled, and she shoots.”
Coco was shot in her right paw, but she is expected to be ok.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office gave the following statement:
The family this was not the first time mistakenly came into their yard searching for another unit. She claims a similar incident happened in 2024.
