The American Kennel Club (AKC) has announced the most popular dog breeds in the United States in 2024, and for the third year in a row, the French Bulldog is the most popular dog breed in America. Frenchies began their rise to dominance in 2022 when they took the title from the Labrador Retriever, which had held the top spot for 31 years.
To determine the most popular dog breeds in America, the AKC reviews its registration statistics and identifies which breeds have the most registered members.
The AKC recognized French Bulldogs in 1898, and they have steadily grown in popularity worldwide—especially in cities and rural areas across the United States. Their playful nature and small size make them ideal for various lifestyles, in addition to their undeniable cuteness. According to the AKC, French Bulldogs have climbed the rankings over the past 12 years, starting at No. 14 in 2012. By 2021, they reached the top three, ranking No. 2, before finally claiming the top spot in 2022.
Martha is a big fan of Frenchies. She added Luna Moona, a black French Bulldog, to her family in 2024. Luna is now competing in AKC dog shows—maybe she'll be the next Best in Show!

If you're interested in adding a French Bulldog (or any dog) to your family, always do your research to ensure you're buying a healthy dog from a responsible breeder. You can also find many purebred dogs through breed-specific rescue groups.
