The World Dog Alliance Condemns MET Police for Shooting Dogs and Calls for Reform – Newswire

The World Dog Alliance (WDA) condemns the senseless killing of two dogs by the Metropolitan Police Service (MET Police) on 7 May 2023 in London. This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for reform in law enforcement practices to protect the lives of man’s best friends.

The World Dog Alliance (WDA), an international non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and welfare of dogs and cats worldwide, believes that the use of lethal force against animals should be prohibited. In response to this appalling incident, the WDA has launched an online petition on change.org (https://www.change.org/p/to-prohibit-lethal-weapons-against-dogs-and-cats-in-law-enforcement-in-uk?utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=custom_url&recruited_by_id=62635f70-f611-11ed-985a-ff86bd349d9f). This petition serves as a call to action, urging the government, the UK Parliament, and animal activists to collaborate in the creation of a more compassionate and humane environment for dogs and cats. By advocating for the prohibition of lethal weapons against these innocent animals in law enforcement, the WDA hopes to ensure that similar tragedies never occur again.
The founder of the WDA, Genlin, expressed deep disappointment and criticized the actions of the UK police officers involved in the incident. “The police officers had multiple non-lethal ways to deal with the dogs, but they chose one of the most foolish and cruel methods. It is hard to believe such atrocity happens in a country that claims to be the world’s most animal-friendly nation. It is truly disappointing.”
The WDA explains that law enforcement agencies should receive specialized training and have access to non-lethal alternatives when dealing with animals, such as tranquilizers or other humane methods. It calls upon all concerned citizens, animal welfare organizations, and compassionate individuals to support this cause by signing the petition. “Together, we can make a difference and pave the way for a future where the rights and welfare of dogs and cats are valued and safeguarded,” said Kike Yuen, Europe representative of the WDA.
The WDA pledges to take subsequent actions through issuing statements, gathering parliamentary endorsements, and inviting members of parliament to raise questions in parliament. These actions aim to urge the London police to publicly apologize, take disciplinary action against the officers involved in the shooting, and include dog handling in the basic training for police officers. This will ensure that law enforcement agencies adhere to animal welfare standards when dealing with cases involving animals. Ultimately, the goal is to push for legislation by the UK government to prohibit the use of lethal weapons by law enforcement personnel against animals.
