The annual pet surfing competition, a fixture in the Bay Area since 2016, was held just south of San Francisco on August 3.

With a little help from their owners, and dressed in rashies and floatation devices, the pups waded into the waves to compete for the Top Surf Dog award.

Dogs of all sizes faced off in a range of events including solo dog surfing, tandem dog and human surfing, tandem dog surfing and stand up paddleboarding.
Some competitors chose to stand on all fours while others opted to sit or lay down on the board but all had tails wagging.

Judges scored the pups based on their length of ride, technique, confidence and size or intensity of the wave.
The Top Dog overall surfing champion was a chocolate labrador, named Cacau, from Brazil.
Cacau and her owner Ivan Moreira swept the competition, taking home medals in the extra large dog category, stand up paddleboarding and the human and dog tandem event.
Cacau and her dog pal Koa also came third in the double dog tandem surfing competition.
The Northern Californian championship raises money for charities around the world with each dog sponsored to compete on behalf of a cause.
