Life on the streets can be unforgiving for dogs, marked by fear, uncertainty, and discomfort. While shelters provide safety, nourishment, and care, the longer animals stay there, the more stressed and overlooked they can feel. Even with compassionate staff working tirelessly to make the dogs feel loved, it’s not the same as having a forever home. For a dog named Loki, this was his reality—until he met Abigail, who worked at a low-cost spay-neuter clinic and stumbled upon Loki one day. The connection was immediate.

Abigail fell for the sweet pup instantly. When she discovered he was unwell, her heart ached, and she decided to foster him. “He held my hand for, pretty much the whole ride home,” Abigail shared with The Dodo in the video below. “The look on his face was so powerful. Loki realized that he wasn’t getting left at the shelter… You could just tell that he was relieved.” It was as though Loki understood his life was finally changing for the better.

Wanting to see how Loki would fit into their family, Abigail introduced him to her son, Leo. The moment the two met, it was pure magic—they bonded instantly, as though they had been searching for one another all their lives. From that day forward, Leo and Loki were inseparable. “If Leo is going outside, Loki’s out there getting into stuff with him,” Abigail said. Initially, the family only intended to foster Loki. “We have a 3-year-old son, we have two Great Danes, so our house was pretty full,” she explained.

Despite their initial hesitation, Loki soon became a foster fail, officially joining the family. Abigail’s husband wasn’t thrilled with the idea at first, but Loki quickly won him over. Now, watching Leo and Loki grow up side by side fills their parents with happiness and gratitude. “The feeling of safety after being in a tough spot in their lives—I wish more dogs could experience it,” Abigail shared.

Rescuers swooped in, but when they got the pup into their care, she had lost the use of her back legs, was struggling to breathe, and weighed just around 20 pounds.

Loki, once a stray longing for a chance, now knows the joy of unconditional love and companionship. This is why animal adoption is so important. There are many deserving pets longing for a home to call their own. Please consider opening your heart and home to a shelter animal. They will repay you with love and gratitude every single day of their lives!
