DEAR PET TALK: Frankly, the only ones I want to give a valentine to are my cat and dog. Any suggestions? —Heartful of Fur
DEAR HEARTFUL OF FUR: I’m with you, our children always included pets when making their homemade valentines. Let’s answer this question over two weeks — there are just that many great products your pets would enjoy.
Cats are both shy and social, playful and meditative. Having their own “spot” definitely builds self-esteem and security. Vinny immediately claimed the “Cat Cube” by Lesure Pet as soon as we unfolded it. This furry checkerboard castle is big enough for two felines, and we positioned it in the window so he can sunbathe. He also tried out the Lesure “Comfy Donut” with his brother Reggie, and they definitely had some fun playing hide-and-go-meow. The donut can be zipped together, or unzipped to make a long tube. If we were fostering kittens, the donut would be in heavy rotation right now. (Lesurepet.com)
However, don’t be stingy on a gift for yourself: if you’re like every other pet-lover I know, your clothes are probably coated in fur. When Be PAWSitive therapy pets visit adults, we always offer a lint brush, and put lap pets on a blanket. However, it’s easy to come home with a layer of fuzz. I was very happy to discover a new product, the “Furzapper” is highly effective at removing pet hair. This device consists of two silicon paw-shaped pads. Put them in your washing machine and they will miraculously remove the fur from your clothing — and they work in the dryer too. The Furzapper was invented by Michael Sweigart, who discovered the miraculous fur-grabbing properties of silicon when he was making a mask (he’s a man with many hobbies). Some tinkering, legal assistance and an appearance on Shark Tank has led to national sales in the many millions. (Furzapper in big-box stores and online).
Next week, we’ll review excellent gifts for dog lovers, because Valentine’s Day is all month, and February’s holidays include: Love Your Pet Day (Feb. 20) and Walk Your Dog Day (Feb. 22)
