The Last of Us and Uncharted developer Naughty Dog’s next game has finally been revealed, and it’s a doozy. The game developer’s new project is called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a sci-fi adventure set thousands of years in the future. The game’s protagonist is a dangerous bounty hunter named Jordan A. Mun, who gets stranded on a strange planet no one has escaped from in over 600 years.
Here’s the reveal trailer:
Naughty Dog had a shocking announcement to bring to The Game Awards this year. The game developer revealed its long-in-the-works new sci-fi game, which is what it calls “a new franchise” to boot. This would make the game part of Naughty Dog’s fifth franchise, following Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, The Last of Us and Uncharted.
In an official announcement post, game director Neil Druckmann – who returns from co-directing The Last of Us Part 2 – described the game as the studio’s “wildest, most creative story yet,” having been in development since 2020. Here’s the game’s rough synopsis:
Intergalactic stars our newest protagonist, Jordan A. Mun, a dangerous bounty hunter who ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago. In fact, anyone who’s flown to it hoping to unravel its mysterious past was never heard from again. Jordan will have to use all her skills and wits if she hopes to be the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit.
Intergalactic will also feature “the deepest gameplay in Naughty Dog’s history, taking our learnings from our previous franchises and pushing them beyond anything we’ve ever done before.” Protagonist Jordan A. Mun will be portrayed by Tati Gabrielle (The Last of Us on HBO), but other cast members spotted in the trailer include Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) and Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul).
The trailer also confirmed that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails fame are scoring Intergalactic’s soundtrack. The game is currently in development for the PlayStation 5, but has no release date.
