Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, U.S. Army Specialist Kellee Michelle Juares-Marroquin wasn’t waiting for Santa; Kellee was waiting to be reunited with her former partner, a nine-year-old Belgian Malinois named Darco.
Kellee and Darco served together for two years in Vicenza, Italy, where they helped lower criminal activity and protected local civilians along with their fellow service members. Prior to that, this incredible canine had spent five years stationed overseas with the U.S. Army, where he protected civilians and his fellow troops as an elite military working dog.
Over the course of his military career, Darco was stationed in Germany and Italy. He worked with four K-9 handlers, but had struggled to connect with people in the past. That all changed when he was teamed up with Kellee. The pair bonded immediately, and soon this headstrong Malinois would listen to no one but her.
Sadly, when Kellee was reassigned to another base in 2025, she was forced to leave her beloved Darco behind. Then fate intervened.
Kellee received word in December that Darco was due to be retired, and she knew that she would do everything in her power to make sure that his forever home would be with her and her husband in Crofton, Maryland. However, this is not as straightforward as it may seem.
By law, when a military dog retires from service, their most recent handler has the first opportunity to adopt them. However, they are also responsible for their transportation, which is an expensive and complicated process. And just like their human counterparts, military dogs may become injured or ill while in service, which adds even more costs to the situation. That’s when American Humane Society (AHS) stepped in to lend a hand.
The nonprofit organization is proud to reunite retired military dogs with their former handlers, providing transportation and covering the costs of lifelong veterinary care. Thanks to AHS, Darco was able to join Kellee at her home, just in time for Christmas. The program will also fund Darco’s upcoming surgery to repair a ruptured cruciate ligament, an injury he sustained during his Army career. This exceptional program allows four-legged military heroes to receive the comfortable, loving retirement they deserve.
It was a Christmas to remember for Kellee and Darco, and hopefully, the first of many they will enjoy together.
