TRENDING:
Friends of Lorain County Dog Kennel have fought to keep dogs out of the shelter and get them into loving homes.
The nonprofit works exclusively with the Lorain County Dog Kennel to bring extra care, pay vet bills and even send dogs to training.
Tory Mittler, president of the Friends of Lorain County Dog Kennel, said she felt the need to start the organization due to the high number of dogs brought into the kennel.
“The rescues are all very full, and there’s more and more dogs coming in,” Mittler said. “The more that we can do to help dogs get adopted or even help dogs stay in their own homes, the better.”
Mittler said for the past year, the shelter has been at a constant full capacity.
The shelter can house up to 30 medium to big-sized dogs.
Due to the lack of space, the shelter has had to utilize smaller cages for medium-sized dogs.
“There’s very rarely a time where we have had more than three cages open at a time,” Mittler said.
Lorain County announced an expansion to the shelter will be completed in spring 2025.
The addition will add 20 new cages.
Mittler said she believes the influx of dogs is due to backyard breeders.
“Backyard breeders keep breeding animals to make money off of them,” sher said. “They don’t get them fixed and they don’t check who they’re giving them to.”
Mitler said the shelter sees a lot of puppies because the backyard breeders are not socializing and training them.
By the time they are 2 years old, they can be obnoxious, she said.
“Another problem we have is a lot of people are renting and landlords are not allowing pets,” Mittler said. “There are irresponsible pet owners who allow them to tear up rental homes.”
Mittler said her group is doing everything it can to cope with the number of dogs in the shelter.
She urges the public to help by acquiring a license for their dogs.
“The state law requires that a license is on your dog at all times,” Mittler said. “If your dog gets loose, people can put the tag number in online and get a phone number to come bring you your dog rather than taking it to the kennel.”
