The Village of Chase issued an advisory on dealing with aggressive dogs after a recent incident, despite it being a one-off event.
The precautionary notice was posted to the village website March 11, offering six tips for residents to use in the rare case they encounter an aggressive dog after what corporate officer Sean O’Flaherty assured was “one isolated incident.”
“There was enough emotional distress on one person that I committed to that person to sharing something publicly about what to do if confronted by an aggressive dog,” he explained, adding there is “no pattern of aggressive dogs” in Chase, and the post to the website was “an empathetic response to one particular situation.”
The advisory, which can be found at chasebc.ca, recommends staying calm with slow movements, avoiding eye contact to appear less threatening, being like a ‘tree’ and standing still, distracting if possible if there’s an item to toss, backing away slowly and, if attacked, protect your face, neck and chest, curl into a ball if knocked down and have someone call 911.
If needed, such incidents can be reported to local animal control at 250-679-3238.
