Dylan Micheal Werner, 27, was released from Vanderburgh County Jail after being accused of inflicting harm on a dog, leading to severe facial injuries. The incident came to light when the dog, under Werner’s care, was returned to the Warrick County Humane Society with a fractured eye socket among other injuries. Jessica Werner, Dylan’s wife and an employee at the humane society at the time, discovered the dog’s condition upon its return on February 5.

Jessica had left the dog with her husband on February 1, receiving a call later that day from him claiming the dog’s aggression. Due to strains in their relationship, there was minimal conversation about the incident. She noticed blood on the dog’s mouth and front legs upon her return. Upon returning the dog to the shelter, she was informed of its skull fracture, leading to her termination from the humane society.
Dylan Werner, in a subsequent interview with deputies, admitted to hitting the dog “harder than he should have,” asserting self-defense against the dog’s aggressive behavior, which he claimed did not result in an attack or bite. Jessica countered this claim, stating the dog had never previously shown aggression towards people or other animals.
Authorities noted Dylan Werner’s apparent lack of remorse or concern for the dog’s welfare during the interview. Following his arrest, a bond of $750 was set, and he has been released. The current state of the dog remains unclear, but it received treatment at Fort Branch Animal Hospital.
