Britain has long been a nation of dog lovers – but our human partners may be feeling left out.
Four in ten owners tell their pet they love them more often than their other half, a poll found.
Twenty-three per cent admit that while they rarely buy gifts for their lover except on special occasions, they happily spend up to £266 on random presents for their pup.
Nine in ten (93 per cent) believe their pet knows they are loved, and 13 per cent confess to ‘spooning’ their dog in bed, with 11 per cent even kissing it on the lips, the study of 1,000 owners commissioned by dog sitting firm Rover.com found.

But canine behaviourist Adem Fehmi said: ‘While a lot of dogs love affection… some may feel uneasy or get overwhelmed with physical contact.
‘They may just feel more comfortable when you express your love, such as spending quality time together.’
