The rescue team at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) is no stranger to helping dogs in need, often traveling across the city to provide aid. They spend countless hours each week searching for animals in distress, prepared for rescues wherever they’re needed. However, earlier this month, a surprising situation unfolded right outside their own facility — a rescue so close to home that it left the team in disbelief. What started as an ordinary day turned extraordinary when staff discovered an abandoned pup mere steps from their door.
While walking along the memorial sidewalk outside the SRSL building, surrounded by tribute bricks and benches, the staff spotted a lone dog tied to a nearby tree. The team was stunned, as the area is often visited by families with their pets — but this Pit Bull mix had been left all alone.
Realizing he needed immediate help, they rushed to his side. The dog’s reaction said everything. “As we approached him, he seemed to say, ‘Oh, thank goodness, yes, come help me! I’m all by myself! I’m just a baby boy!’” SRSL wrote on Facebook. It was clear he was overjoyed to see kind faces coming to his rescue. Click below to see the dog’s ‘rescue reaction.’
The newly named Professor Plum didn’t hold back his gratitude. He greeted the team with nonstop tail wags, happy jumps, and plenty of kisses. The rescuers offered soothing words and gentle pets before leading him back inside the shelter for care and evaluation. Within hours, Professor Plum’s kind demeanor and loving energy had already worked their magic.
A short time after being brought to safety, Professor Plum was off to a foster home — one that turned out to hold a familiar surprise. Barb Kumar, his foster mom, immediately recognized him. “I fostered him and his sister at 10 weeks old, and both got adopted,” Kumar explained to The Dodo.
“Now, at 16 months old, he is with me.” Professor Plum, who hadn’t forgotten her, showered Kumar with excited kisses as if no time had passed. He settled effortlessly into her home, where a new group of dog siblings eagerly welcomed him.
Since his rescue, Professor Plum has been thriving. His days are now filled with long walks, playful adventures, and cozy cuddles with his foster mom. Whether lounging with his furry siblings or snuggled up on the couch, Professor Plum seems to know he’s safe and loved.
Soon, Professor Plum will head to his forever home, where a new family awaits to shower him with love and care. His foster mom has no doubts about his bright future. “Professor Plum is quite amazing!” Kumar said.
For a pup who started off tied to a tree with an uncertain fate, the next chapter of his life is shaping up to be nothing short of extraordinary.
