When animal rescue workers responded to a call to help an ailing dog’s owner who was nearing the end of their life, they didn’t hesitate to step in. However, upon arriving at the property, they faced an unexpected obstacle. Lazarus, a dog who had been confined to a barn stall for six long years, was trapped in deplorable conditions. The threshold to his stall was so caked with dirt and muck that rescuers couldn’t even access the space to reach him.
The buildup of waste and debris had created a nearly impenetrable barrier, a testament to the neglect Lazarus had endured. The scene was heartbreaking—his living conditions were beyond unsanitary, and it was clear he hadn’t received proper care in years. Despite being initially pushed away from the property, the rescue team was determined to help Lazarus escape the dire situation he had been trapped in for so long. Their unwavering commitment marked the beginning of a life-changing mission for this resilient dog.
When the rescue team finally managed to reach the stall, the two women were horrified by the condition Lazarus was in. His coat was so matted and filthy that it severely restricted his movement, leaving him barely able to stand or walk. The years of neglect were painfully evident, and it was clear that urgent action was needed.
Without delay, Lazarus was taken to a professional groomer for a much-needed bath and haircut. At first, the dog was hesitant and resisted the handlers’ attempts to trim his matted fur. The unfamiliarity of the situation likely added to his discomfort. However, it didn’t take long for Lazarus to realize how good it felt to shed the heavy, tangled mess that had weighed him down for years. As the grooming progressed, Lazarus began to relax, and with each snip of the scissors, his transformation into a lighter, more comfortable version of himself started to take shape. This was the first step in his journey toward a better life.
Lazarus had about 33 pounds of fur removed, and he appeared as if he were a brand-new pet. Unfortunately, the dog was having trouble retaining the fact that he was liberated. Jessica Kincheloe, the groomer who saved Lazarus, said that he was extremely suspicious of everyone.
After a while, the man was approached by another dog. He was given goodies and he quickly warmed up to everyone. It was obvious that he wasn’t used to human contact. It’s possible it had been years since he’d felt a gentle, caring touch.
Lazarus was at the Big Fluffy Dog Rescue for a few weeks before being adopted. He couldn’t walk initially, but with the proper therapy and training, he was able to take his first steps. It didn’t take long for this pup to find a good home. His new family celebrated his eighth birthday by showering him with all of the love he deserved. You’d never guess that he used to weigh 35 pounds of filth him now that he has a lovely coat of hair and a wonderful family to look after him!
