A study by Harvard Medical School scientists found that dogs become 11 percent more aggressive under certain conditions
Previous studies have shown that warmer weather and higher concentrations of environmental pollutants make humans, rhesus monkeys and rats aggressive.
That’s why Klas Linman from Harvard Medical School in Boston, decided to investigate with his team if something similar happens in dogs.
For the purpose of the study, researchers collected data on dog bites that were recorded between 2009 and 2019 in eight US cities – including Dallas, Los Angeles and New York. In that period, a total of 69.525 incidents were reported, that is, an average of three bites per day during the ten-year period, National Geographic writes, Telegrafi follows.
This data was then compared with information on daily temperatures, PM 2.5 particle pollution and harmful ozone concentrations, as well as amounts of rainfall and UV radiation.
Previous human studies have shown that harmful ozone can cause aggression. Since this gas has a strong smell, it causes oxidative stress in the respiratory tract and damages lung function. It is extremely reactive and causes the release of numerous substances in the body that also affect behavior. Something similar has been observed in dogs.
Increasing levels of harmful ozone made dogs more aggressive on average by 3 per cent, but what had the biggest impact on the number of bites was the increase in UV values – by 11 per cent. While high temperatures increase the risk of a dog becoming aggressive by 4 percent. However, the study authors could not find a link between high values of PM 2.5 particles and an increase in the number of dog bites.
When the weather is nice, people and dogs tend to spend more time together. Therefore, the authors of the study tried to determine whether the number of dog bites is higher on such days. The analysis concluded that the risk of dog bites during weekends and public holidays – when dog owners naturally have more time for their pets – is lower. /Telegraph/
