Troy and Jessica Ratliff have finally secured a U.S. patent for their AXL grooming loop after three years.
OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEVV) – In 2006, Troy Ratliff, alongside his wife Jessica, launched On the Go Studio.
It is a mobile grooming vehicle structured to tailor all the needs for dogs needing to be clipped, washed, and brushed.
“We wanted to be mobile just to be something different,” says Troy Ratliff, owner of On the Go Studio and Alpha Grooming products.
It’s about convenience. There’s no kennels, and most grooming appointments only take an hour.
In 2013, Troy realized there was something missing, more reliable grooming tools.
“At the time there weren’t a whole lot of options for grooming tools. Out of frustration I started making my own for me and my brother and it just kind of morphed into ‘let’s just do this for real,” says Ratliff.
Ratliff then created the AXL grooming loop, which helps secure the dog on the table or tub.
His design, after careful research, is waterproof and coated in nylon, which makes it easier to disinfect.
Soon competitors began to make similar products, saturating the market with less safer options in grooming tools.
The Ratliff’s decided to take the next step in applying for a U.S. patent.
“We had just decided that it was time to make it a little more difficult to copy,” says Ratliff.
The process was lengthy. The AXL grooming loop had to check off numerous boxes involving its ability, quality, and uniqueness for the public.
After 3 years of dedicated efforts, the Ratliff’s finally received their U.S. patent. they tell 44News it’s a relief knowing all of their hard work has paid off of their one of a kind design.
Now if anyone attempts to make a similar product, they have to go through the Ratliff’s for the proper licensing agreement.
“it’s our hope that we don’t want to stop anyone from being in business, but we just get credit for what we design,” says Ratliff.
Ratliff has three other U.S. patents waiting to be approved for his other products, such as the suction cup tie-down point.
This product was voted the best new product in the grooming industry in 2022.
AXL Grooming products are also distributed in Florida, California, Canada, Australia, and possibly Brazil in the future.
“We just want to continue to do it as well as we can, always offering the best quality, and not faltering from that,” says Ratliff.
