Buffy Dog Grooming – putting your best paw forward – The Avondhu Press

Taking the time to care for our four-legged friends is something that Buffy Dog Grooming prides itself in, for all breeds big and small.
From chihuahuas to Newfoundlands, Justyna Osyra has seen to it that any dog who comes to her is fresh, gleaming, perfectly trimmed and of course, comfortable throughout the whole process.
In 2013, Justyna completed her first course in dog grooming in Poland and ran her own salon until moving to Ireland where she worked in a factory for a time before picking up the shears again and opening her new studio in the heart of Fermoy town, on Patrick Street.
“I loved dogs and I had dogs in Poland and decided to do something in that area, something that I liked. I wasn’t sure if it was a good choice at the time because there was a lot involved and a lot to learn about looking after and caring for dogs when grooming.
“When I finished the course, I was very excited and full of knowledge about dogs. That course made me sure that it was a good choice and encouraged me to open my own salon,” she said.
Since beginning her venture into the world of dog grooming, Justyna has been constantly pursuing her training and upskilling to keep up with the changing trends, advancing techniques and demands of the dog grooming world.
“It’s good to do something you love, if you’re doing something with passion. You have to keep training and upskilling to keep up with clients and the changing trends. It’s like going to a hairstylist, we change our own hair and want something different, it’s the same with dogs,” she said.
Buffy Dog Grooming currently offers a range of services from a simple wash and dry to a luxurious full groom including for breeds ranging from the extra tiny to the extra large.
Justyna notes that one of the most important aspects of her job is ensuring that the dog is happy and comfortable throughout the entire process and says that she takes the time to let her clients familiarise themselves with the space and the grooming process.
“I have a client with a Newfoundland from Bantry. They came to me a few weeks ago and now they’re coming to me every month because they couldn’t find anyone to groom their dog. It’s an extra large breed. They arrived from Bantry and I spent almost six hours with the dog, brushing, bathing and grooming. It was a lot of work but they were so happy. I was worried because it was quite a lot of time, even for the dog, but she was fantastic, playing, sitting on the couch, getting treats.
“I like to spend time with the dogs to play with them and get to know them so that they feel comfortable coming here, they get to know the smells and sounds so that next time when they come they don’t have to be worried or scared. If the dog needs to take breaks, we take breaks. I want them to be happy and comfortable here and I have a waiting area if owners prefer to stay with their dogs while they’re being groomed,” Justyna said.
While it is recommended that most dogs are groomed every 6 to 8 weeks, Buffy Dog Grooming recognises the constraints of a busy lifestyle, offering late evening and weekend services.
