The canine set a new Guinness World Record in February 2023 as the oldest dog on record
Bobi, the world’s oldest dog, has died eight months after setting a new record for the oldest dog alive as per the Guinness Book of Records.
He died at his home in Portugal on Saturday, October 21 and was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, who survived 11478 days on Earth, his veterinarian wrote on social media.
Before he became oldest ever canine, the record had been held for over a century by ‘Bluey‘, a dog from Australia who died in 1939 aged 29 years and five months. Bobi lived until 31 year and 165 days which is around twice the length of a long life for a typical dog.
His age had been verified by the Portuguese government through their pet database, managed by the National Union of Veterinarians.
It’s not yet known who the new oldest living dog is.
Leonel Costa, his owner, said that Bobi lived a trouble-free life and lived in a calm and peaceful environment although towards the end of his time he struggled with walking and eyesight.
He had a scare in 2018 when he collapsed and struggled with breathing but he made a full recovery and managed to extend his life for another half-decade.
He had lived in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal, which is located approximately 112 miles south-east of the nation’s capital, Lisbon.
Bobi‘s family had a knack for long lives with his mother surviving to 18 years old and another making it to 22.
Smaller dogs live for an average of 16 years, medium dogs for 10-13 years and large dogs for around 7-8 years.
Bobi‘s breed averages 10-12 years, meaning he lived as much as three times the expected lifespan for his kind.
