COLUMBIA, S.C. — Seniors at W.J. Kennen High School are getting ready to host their annual dog grooming event for the community, just in time for the holidays.
“Bring your dogs out people, please,” Kyasia Baker said.
Baker is a student in the Animal Science II class at Keenan High school.
For the third year in a row students like Baker are taking what they’ve learned in the classroom and putting it in action.
“They learn to talk to clientele. They learn how to do pet restraints, they learn how to deal with aggression,” Maria Ausburn said.
Ausburn teaches this specialized group of students at Keenan High.
These seniors have been studying for four years to prepare for what happens this Saturday.
“We will be grooming dogs at a low price just to kind of help out with whoever may need it around the holidays. It’s meant to be a learning experience because we have a grooming class so it’s helping us sharpen our skills,” Laila Moon said.
Moon is the vice president of the Future Farmers of America chapter at the school.
“It’s beneficial to me because not only is it something that I can take into the real world in case I want any pets, but I’m kind of just helping people who need it,” she said.
Services will include a wash, blow dry as well as nail, teeth and ear care.
“We do ask that you pay upon arrival and we do only accept cash. It is $20, tips are welcomed and of course they can add on our five dollar Christmas package which includes a bandana as well as a Christmas scent,” Ausburn said.
Students will be grooming dogs from 9am-3pm at Keenan High School on Saturday.
All breeds are welcome and no appointment is needed.
