BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) – A Fairfield family is grieving after their 4-year-old dog Roscoe escaped from a veterinarian’s office and was killed.
Roscoe was getting a test done at Animal Care Center Wednesday when he got away.
“He wasn’t gone for more than 6, 7 minutes and the doctor came in and asked if we had gotten a text about Roscoe and we said no. She said ‘Well, he slipped his collar and he’s heading toward Panera,’” said Ashlynn Haag, Roscoe’s owner.
Ashlynn and Pam Haag say they immediately jumped in the car to look for Roscoe.
About 20 minutes later they got a call from a distraught man telling them he accidentally hit Roscoe on Bypass 4 near Port Union Road.
“He stopped. He is our angel,” Pam said.
Animal Care Center said in a statement that Roscoe became startled while outside on a leash, pulled away from a staff member and they weren’t able to catch him.
“They usually put a slip knot on him. I mean we’ve been going to that vet forever. There was just things that wasn’t done properly that are usually done and I just have mixed feelings.. It just could’ve been prevented I think,” Roscoe’s owners said.
The Center says they’re working with local authorities, requesting an exception to an ordinance that prevented them from installing a fence.
“And then we find out that they have tried and tried to get a fence through the City of Fairfield and Fairfield City Council keeps shooting them down and they even have a boarding and we just don’t understand,” Pam said.
As for Roscoe, he joined the Haag family at 4 weeks old.
“He was a little bundle of joy. He was the greatest thing in my life by far.. and he was just such a joy to have around. He made everybody in this house life better. You walk in he smiles at you.. He does his little wiggle,” Ashlynn said.
Roscoe’s brother Blizzard is missing him too.
“Our husky he’s just.. he doesn’t know why his best friend didn’t come home. He still confused and sad,” Ashlynn said.
Without Roscoe, the Haggs say there’s a void in their home and they want make sure this doesn’t happen ever again.
They say they’ll do whatever it takes to get a fence built at the Center.
If it is, they were told it will be dedicated to Roscoe.
Animal Care Center says they’re covering burial expenses, making grief counseling available to Roscoe’s family, and their staff, and they say they will provide free initial healthcare for 15 newly adopted pets, so they can be loved just like Roscoe.
