A dog allegedly left tied to a pole at an Ontario Park is now being cared for at an animal shelter.
York Regional Police are currently searching for a suspect vehicle who fled a dog park near Lake Drive South and Robert Street in Georgina, Ont., on Sunday morning after a reported animal complaint.
Investigators said the dog, a cane corso breed, was left tied to a pole in freezing conditions. Reports confirm that it was minus 14 degrees at the time of the incident.
They said the dog did not appear to be in distress and had no visible injuries when they arrived on scene.
Jennifer Yaffa, supervisor of Georgina Animal Shelter and Adoption Centre, say that have taken the dog into their facility to get necessary care and attention.
The animal shelter in Georgina says the dog has now been named Winter. “She is quite shy, quite nervous. It was a pretty traumatic experience to be left in the park,” Yaffa said. “Each animal gets a specialized welfare plan when they come in. We are currently monitoring her,” added Yaffa.
Surveillance footage released by police show a black pickup truck driving into frame and putting the vehicle into park. The suspect is then seen walking the dog on a leash to the other side, where it is tied to a pole and abandoned, police said.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said Yaffa.
Police have described the suspect vehicle in the video as a black pickup truck with a quad cab, a black roof track that extends to the rear of the truck, and dark rims.
“Unfortunately, incidents like these are too common,” police say.
The investigation is still ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
