Matt McEntire, a dedicated volunteer with the Humane Society of North Texas, had no idea that a quiet walk on New Year’s Day would turn into a life-saving mission. Accompanied by his dog, Dublin, McEntire strolled through a local park, embracing the crisp start to 2025. As they passed a trash can, their peaceful walk was interrupted by faint, muffled cries coming from within. Curious and concerned, McEntire stopped to investigate. What he discovered was both heartbreaking and urgent: eight tiny puppies, trembling and frightened, abandoned in the trash.
“He heard faint whimpers coming from a garbage can and, upon investigating, discovered puppies in desperate need of help,” Cassie Davidson, senior director of marketing, communications, and public relations at Humane Society of North Texas, told The Dodo. Without hesitation, McEntire knew he had to act fast. Since there were so many puppies and he was alone, he carried them home in shifts, ensuring each one made it to safety.
The puppies were in dire condition. They were malnourished, dehydrated, and infested with worms and parasites. The cold and lack of resources had left them vulnerable, their health teetering on the edge. Luckily, they were immediately taken in by the Humane Society of North Texas, where they received urgent medical care and a warm, safe environment to recover.
In honor of their rescuer’s Irish heritage and his heroic actions, the puppies were given Irish-inspired names: Phineas, O’Malley, Lorcan, Finnegan, Paddy, Keeva, Guinness, and Dublin — a nod to McEntire’s loyal dog who was by his side throughout the rescue.
“Most of the puppies are thriving and will be available for adoption at [this week’s] event,” Davidson shared. “Two of the little ones are still in our medical area recovering, but they’re on the mend and receiving the best care. We’re so proud of their progress and can’t wait to see them all find loving homes!”
Rescuers swooped in, but when they got the pup into their care, she had lost the use of her back legs, was struggling to breathe, and weighed just around 20 pounds.
Thanks to McEntire’s quick thinking and compassion, the abandoned puppies now have a second chance at life. Soon, they’ll begin the next chapter of their journey in forever homes filled with love and care.
