A secondary school teacher who allegedly locked her five and seven-year-old sons in a dog kennel earlier this year was expected to be charged with seven counts of cruelty.
The 40-year-old woman, of Sangre Grande, was arrested at her home on Wednesday night by officers of the Special Victims Department. Last evening, police officers received instructions to charge her with seven offences of cruelty.
A police report stated that in March this year, the father of the children reported the matter to the St Margaret’s Police Station.
The father, who resides in Claxton Bay, allegedly reported that he received a phone call from one of his sons who informed him that his mother had physically assaulted him. A police officer of the St Margaret’s Police Station relayed the report to the Special Victims Department and the matter came under investigation.
On Wednesday night, officers of the Eastern Division Special Victims Department went to the home of the suspect in Glenda Road, Fishing Pond, and arrested the teacher. She was subsequently interviewed yesterday by investigating officers.
Later yesterday, officers consulted with their legal department and instructions were given to charge her with seven counts of cruelty to a child.
She is expected to appear in court on Monday.
‘This is madness’
The founder of the St James Police Youth Club Cpl Derrick Sharbodie, who was a guest on TV6’s Beyond the Tape last evening, condemned the abuse of children.
Sharbodie, who has worked with the Western Division Community Policing Unit, said that any society must protect its vulnerable members such as children and the geriatric community.
‘We must guarantee the protection of children. A cage? We must leave no stone unturned. Abuse is abuse, whether it comes from a woman or a man, our children must be protected,’ he stressed.
He also commended the people who brought forward the information to be investigated and in the public domain.
‘I salute the whistleblower, the person who informed the police. This is madness,’ said Sharbodie.
The corporal also said: ‘I commend the media for bringing this to the fore. People need to know that there is no secret or special arrangement in place when a child is being abused. I tip my cap to the Child Protection Unit, other officers and members of the public who frown on this ugly behaviour with abuse to our children.’
