RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Black Hills Groom Room located in Rapid City is a cat and dog grooming business that opened two years ago.
“There is two other businesses in this building, so we all are in it kind of together. There’s a dog boarding business, and there is a daycare,” Jessica Green, Black Hills Groom Room owner, said.
Black Hills Groom Room offers haircuts, nail trims, and hair color.
“It really depends on the dog, the breed, the size, and what they’re getting done, we generally ask for three to four hours,” Green said.
Although they opened just a few years ago, Green has been styling for much longer.
“I’ve been doing it for 15 years. I felt like I was never going to be happy if I didn’t have my own thing, my own salon, my own work of art pretty much,” Green said.
Before working as a professional stylist, Green started by cutting her own dogs’ hair.
“So, grooming I actually started when I was 14, grooming my own dogs at home,” Green said.
Once she got a little older, she worked as a dog bather, where she found her passion for working with animals.
“I just really enjoy animals, I love animals, and I know a lot about dogs in general. So, it just seems natural that I would have a grooming business,” Green said.
When asked why she works on animals and not on humans “animals are amazing, they love you so much from the first time you meet them, they don’t complain about anything ever generally,” Green said.
Besides offering haircuts for cats and dogs, The Black Hills Groom Room also offers hair dyes to its furry clientele.
“First, we have to determine if the dog is a good candidate for a dye. Dogs that are shy, dogs that are really timid, dogs that don’t like people are not good candidates for the dye process,” Green said.
