Green Point, South Africa (22 November 2024) — Sunday, the 17th of November, saw Green Point Park turn into a dog lover’s paradise as 668 dogs and a brave cat all united in the spirit of animal welfare alongside their loving owners. Because of them, this year’s Woefie Wandel event was a tail-wagging success; and one that’ll go down in the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s books.
A park day featuring food stalls, a mobile clinic, art for pooches and walks, the Woefie Wandel event was hosted as a way for the SPCA to raise much-needed funds for the many animals reliant on their care and support.
To put into perspective just how many animals we’re talking about, 23 621 animals came through the SPCA’s gates last year.
“Woefie Wandel is a day for celebrating the love people have for their pets, but it’s also a reminder of the enormous need still out there,” shared Belinda Abraham, Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson.
But, this year’s Woefie Wandel event showed the SPCA team that they are not alone in their ambitious animal endeavours.
Thanks to this year’s wealth of support, the SPCA was able to raise nearly R150,000—a record-breaking increase from last year’s R50,000.
“The support we’ve received this year—both in participation and in funds raised—is incredibly encouraging for our team who face a daily onslaught of unwanted and unloved animals. The SPCA takes in an average of 65 stray and unwanted animals every single day of the year. It isn’t easy for any of us and to have the community rally behind our efforts means more than words could possibly say,” adds an overjoyed Belinda.
