COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A dog, left for dead as a puppy, reunited with her foster mom on Wednesday.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region said in 2023, Animal Law Enforcement officers received a call about multiple dogs trapped in the trunk of a car.
“When they arrived on the scene, the sound of desperate cries for help echoed from the trunk,” the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region said. “Nothing could prepare them for what they saw that day.”
Inside the truck were 10 critically neglected puppies, and the Humane Society said only three of them were still alive.
The Humane Society said the puppies were extremely underweight, dehydrated, hypothermic and their bones were visible through their skin. The three puppies were taken in for emergency care, but ultimately only one puppy survived.
That one remaining puppy was named Griselda and received around-the-clock care to survive. The humane society said a staff member, Allison fostered the puppy, helping nurse her back to help.
Griselda was eventually adopted and nicknamed Bits. On Wednesday, a year later, her new family brought her back to the shelter for a check-up and vaccines where she was finally able to reunite with her foster mom.
“The two shared a tender moment, their bond as strong as ever,” HSPPR said.
The primary owner of the 10 puppies and defendant was sentenced. The Humane Society said their Animal Law Enforcement team made more than 20 home and court visits, spending at least 90 hours on the case.
“We know that the beginning of Bits’ story is incredibly sad and truly horrific,” HSPPR said. “But rather than focus on the act of cruelty that she came from, we choose to focus on the beautiful life she gets to live today. We are grateful to our ALE officers who rescued her, our veterinary team who healed her, our foster family who offered their home to her, and the family who adopted her and gave her a wonderful life.”
